10 - 10 - 2019 JIS and Centurion October 2019: 5 Trends From the Show Floor

by

The JIS and Centurion South Beach shows took place side by side Oct. 4–7 at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Florida—offering retail buyers an impressively wide range of jewelry, from $3 wooden beads to $30,000 diamond necklaces.

Adding to the ease of the shopping experience was the near-seamless transition between the two events—a guard simply scanned your badge when you turned onto the aisle that marked the start of Centurion. The open space really felt like one big, roomy show.

Walking the aisles of the cohabitating shows, several style trends made themselves known. Here are five big ones to bank on for the holidays and beyond.

Art Deco

The stacked geometry of Art Deco design is back—and feels like a pendulum swing back from all the super-simple fashion designs consumers have been wearing, which have often been driven by colored gems. The classic Deco aesthetic was impossible to miss at the Doves by Doron Paloma booth, which displayed a fantastic collection of Deco-inspired onyx, malachite, and 18k yellow gold looks (above).

Vintage Inspired

New York City–based My Story by Jackie Cohen showed classic locket pendants (including one with a 1940s-inspired sunburst design); Brazil’s Hueb showed pearl earrings with 1950s-inspired diamond-studded bows; and Frank Reubel Designs revived a blocky, beautiful diamond and gemstone pendant from its own 1980s-era archives (above). It’s clear that fine fashion jewelry designers are pulling inspiration from the past, which feels like a response to the current popularity of estate jewelry.

Artful Silver

Innovative-feeling silver manufacturers abounded at JIS. New vendor Argent Basic—a Barcelona, Spain–based brand—showed earthy-chic silver and gold-plated rings and bracelets that linked metal elements cast from pieces of slate (see that collection here). Lilly Barrack paired rough, unpolished gems with stunningly creative sterling silver settings (above). And Balaam by Monica Zamora showed a wide range of sculptural silver pieces, including rings and bracelets that balance hollow silver balls and spikes of all stripes.

Rainbow Gems

Few recent trends have stuck around as long as jewels set with rainbow-hued gems. And the JIS show was full of pretty rainbow styles. Among the most compelling were a series of tennis-style clasp bracelets by Sophia by Design studded with a gorgeous kaleidoscope of colored stones (above).

Green Gems

Exhibitors came to JIS and Centurion with plenty of green. Emeralds abounded (see the incredible emerald-and-diamond earrings from NYC’s Jewels by Viomo above), but so did jade and other more accessibly priced gems. NYC’s Bounkit wove plenty of green stones into its feminine, mixed-stone earrings collection. And Siera Jewelry bordered the edge of an incredible diamond cocktail ring with a curving line of green tourmaline (see top photo).
