Objectives Hong Kong Fei Cui Design Biennial Contest aims to enhance creative exchange on Fei Cui Design among designers and enthusiasts all around the world. Fei Cui is a medium of traditional oriental culture, contemporary art and commendable craftsmanship. The contest calls for innovative design, distinguished drawing technique and craftsmanship, strive to promote the oriental gemstone’s influence and prominence at an international level.

Theme of design

"Connections"

Two points connect, two hearts attach, going side by side from the past to the future. Participants are invited to express their emotional connections with people, items, themselves and time with Fei Cui as the medium of design to create an inspirational piece that embraces historical heritage and contemporary spirit by connecting traditional craftsmanship with innovative technology.

Entries Finished products or drawings of jewellery, ornament, accessories or art installations, etc with Fei Cui as the major element.

Entry Categories (six categories)


(A) Open Group (Finished Product): Creative Arts

  • Entry: Ornaments, accessories or art installations, etc with Fei Cui as the major element.
  • Maximum size: 25cm(width) x 25cm(depth) x 25cm(height).
  • Entry with drawing or photo of finished product; shortlisted participants shall submit finish product before deadline.

 

(B) Open Group (Finished Jewellery): Retail price at or over US$10,000 /

(C) Open Group (Finished Jewellery): Retail price under US$10,000

  • Entry: Jewellery made in Fei Cui.
  • Entry with drawing or photo of finished product; shortlisted participants shall submit finish product before deadline.
  • The value of Fei Cui shall be 70% or more of the total value of materials.

 

Remarks: To ensure the finished products match the drawing, participants of categories (A), (B) and (C) shall find the Fei Cui materials and manufacturers by themselves before submission.

 

If necessary, the organiser will offer help in finding suitable Fei Cui materials for shortlisted participants. The organiser has prepared a small amount of Fei Cui materials which can be provided to shortlisted participants for free. The cost of diamonds or gemstones settings and metalwork shall be borne by participants. (E) Students Group of post-secondary institutes or design institutes (Drawings) /
(F) Students Group of Secondary 3 to 6 (Drawings)

  • Eligibility:
    Category (D) – In house designers, independent designers or design enthusiasts;
    Category (E) – Participants who study in post-secondary institutes and design institutes when submitting entry;
    Category (F) – Participants who study in Secondary 3 to 6 when submitting entry.
  • Entry: drawing of natural Fei Cui jewellery, ornament, accessories or art installation.
  • Participants are required to submit drawings. No finished product is needed.

Application Details:
  • Completed application form of “Hong Kong Fei Cui Design Biennial Contest”.
  • Participant in Category (A), (B) or (C) is required to submit drawings or photos of the finished products; while participant in Category (D), (E) or (F) shall submit drawings. Please refer to “Rules and Regulations” for more details.
  • Each entry must be named, and be accompanied by a brief description of the name, design concept and the choice of materials in 300 words (English or Chinese) to give the judges a better understanding about the entry.

Rules and Regulations (Appliable for all categories)
  • Participants can enter all categories, with a maximum of three entries for each category.
  • Each entry can only be submitted to one category.
  • All entries must have natural Fei Cui as the focus of design, while other materials such as diamond and gemstone as subsidiary.
  • Entries can use various materials except products of protected wild animals such as ivory and hawksbill turtle shells, etc.
  • All entries must be original designs of the participants. Plagiarism is prohibited.
  • Entries should never been submitted to other design contests.
  • If a winning design is found to have violated any rules and regulations, the winner will be disqualified by the organiser, and be required to return all the prizes. The case will be made public.
  • There is no restriction on the number of drawings or photos for an entry. The photo shall be or more than 900 x 1280 pixels in the format of either JPG or PNG.
  • The actual scale of the finished product must be indicated in the application form. If it is necessary to make explanatory notes on the drawing, participants should do so in the application form, and make use of supplementary papers when necessary.
  • It is prohibited to show any names of participants, manufacturers, company logos or trademarks on the drawings or finished product.
  • Copyright of participating designs will remain with the participants or their companies. The copyrights cannot be transferred to others before the announcement of competition results.
  • Organiser reserves the rights to adapt all materials participants submitted, such as pictures, slides and explanatory notes, for use in photography, promotion, display, and other media to promote the competition. Copyright will remain with the participants.
  • Organiser assumes no legal responsibility nor any compensation liability when the design of an entry is copied or plagiarised during the competition or display.
  • Organiser will do the utmost to take care of all entries when during competition. However, organiser will not be held responsible for any accidents, damage or loss.
  • Participants shall respect the final decision of the judging panel and the organiser with no objection.

 

 

Rules & Regulations for (A) Open Group (Finished Product): Creative Arts / (B) Open Group (Finished Jewellery): Retail price at or over US$10,000 / (C) Open Group (Finished Jewellery): Retail price under US$10,000

 

1. Only natural Fei Cui (Type A) in any colour is accepted.
2. Participants shall submit either drawings or photos of the finished products.
2.1 Drawings shall be either manual or computer-aided:

  • Hand-drawn entries shall depict colours and materials of the products.
  • Submitted in print, computer-aided drawings shall include 3D, front view and side view images of the jewellery.
  • All entries must be drawn on paper, and mounted on a black A4 (297mmx210mm) cardboard.
  • Participants shall provide their name, the name of the entries and the entry category on the back of black A4 cardboards.


2.2 Participants who submit photos of the product shall provide both of them in print and softcopy:

  • Each entry must come with a minimum of three photos including front view, back view and side view of the entry.
  • Printed photos shall be in 5R (5”x 7”) in size and mounted a black A4 (297mm x 210mm) cardboard, and submitted to organiser by post or by hand. Participants shall indicate their name, the name of the entries and the entry category on the back of a black A4 cardboard.
  • Photos of the finished entry shall be emailed to vxie@hkjja.com.hk in less than 5MB. Filenames shall be rendered in the following format: “name of the entry”-“name of the participant”- “total quantity of photo”-“serial number of the photo (in numerical order)”. For example:”Light·Shadow-JohnChan-3-1”, “Light·Shadow-John Chan-3-2”and “Light·Shadow-JohnChan-3-3”. Files shall be JPG or PNG in format, 900 x 1280 pixels.


3. The shortlisted participants have to seek for the company sponsorship for the productions.
4. Shortlisted participants shall submit the finished products to organiser in due time as advised in the final-entry notice. Finished product that does not tally with the designs or photos will not be accepted.
5. Shortlisted participants shall agree to showcase the participating finished products at exhibitions in order to enter the final selection.
6. Organiser is responsible for the insurance of the entries during the competition period.

 

Rules & Regulations for (D) Open Group (Drawings): Hand-drawn or Computer-aided Design / (E) Students Group of post-secondary institutes or design institutes (Drawings): Hand-drawn or Computer-aided Design / (F) Students Group of Secondary 3 to 6 (Drawings): Hand-drawn or Computer-aided Design


1. Participants are required to submit hand-drawn or computer-aided drawings only. No finished product is required.
2. Hand-drawn entries shall depict the actual colours and materials of the products.
3. Submitted in print, computer-aided drawings shall include 3D, front view and side view images of the jewellery.

Preliminary & Final

  • Submission deadline of entry for preliminary selection: 24 June 2019 (Monday)
    Participants should submit designs or photos of the finished products with application form to“Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association”on or before 24 June 2019.
  • Preliminary selection: on or before 31 July 2019 (Wednesday)
    The shortlisted entries will be announced at the website of “Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association”(www.jja.com.hk). The shortlisted participants will receive a notification email on or before 31 July 2019.
  • Submission deadline of finished product for the final selection: 31 October 2019 (Thursday)
    Shortlisted participants of Category (A), (B) and (C) shall submit the entry to “Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association” on or before 31 October 2019 (Thursday).
  • Final result announcement: January 2020
    The winners will receive a notification email about the contest result and award presentation arrangement.

 

Award Presentation Ceremony


The award presentation ceremony will be held during HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show in March 2020.

 

 

Date & Venue for Showcasing


Winners may be invited to showcase in Christie’s Hong Kong, MoCA Shanghai, Loupe or HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, or even to go under auction at Christie’s Hong Kong.

 

(1) Auction and Showcased at Christie’s Hong Kong in 2020

  • Christie’s may invite the winners or finalists to showcase their entries at spring auction in 2020.
  • Christie’s has strict selection criteria of its auction items, especially the quality of materials. Fei Cui and the matching gemstones applied need to reach collection level. The entry shall have both investment value and artistic value.
  • Christie’s may invite the winners or finalists to showcase their entries at Christie’s gallery. The selected entry shall be in excellent design with high-quality materials though may not reach auction level.
  • Christie’s reserves the right to cancel the auction or showcase depending on the level of the entry.
  • Christie’s reserves the right to select the entries to auction or showcase. Organiser shall help link up Christie’s with his selected participants who are interested in auction and showcase.
  • Christie's selection shall be irrelevant to the design contest results.
  • If participant is interested in showcasing the entry in Christie’s spring auction or showcase, please tick the box “interested in Christie’s Auction and showcase” at the application form. The auction details will be provided to shortlisted participants of the design contest.
  • 90% of Fei Cui art pieces auctioned by Christie’s are jewellery, the rest are ornaments, accessories and others.
  • Christie’s auction results are listed at www.christies.com for reference.

(2) Showcased at Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai in 2020


Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai (MoCA Shanghai) is located at the downtown of Shanghai. MoCA Shanghai holds exhibitions in various themes, and has become a popular platform for artists from different countries to showcase and exchange ideas. The exhibitions in 2018 included “Dior, the Art Of Color” , “Breaking Boundaries: BAZAAR’s 150th Anniversary Exhibition”, etc.

(3) Showcased at Loupe in 2020

Located in the heart of Hong Kong at PMQ Central, Loupe is a platform for local and overseas designers, and craftsman to communicate with the consumers and art enthusiasts. Winning entries will be showcased at Loupe (details TBC). VIP guests and winners will be invited to attend the opening ceremony of the exhibition. Winners will be invited to attend the seminars with Loupe designers in residency.

(4) Complimentary tour of art and culture of jade (July 2020, during summer vacation for schools and institutions)

A total of 30 award-winners of Students Group (Drawing) will participate a complimentary tour to Fei Cui industry base cities such as Shunde and Jie Yang. In visiting, winners are able to appreciate fei cui masterpieces and experience Chinese culture and arts to widen their horizon by viewing the process for a Fei Cui ingenuity and artwork created from a rough.

 

Return of entries

Organiser shall notify the participants of entry return in April 2020. Participants shall collect the entry in person from the organiser. Organiser shall not be liable for any unclaimed entries beyond the specified period. After the entries are returned, if the organiser requires the winners to resubmit their works to be showcased at exhibitions, cooperation is appreciated. The exhibition date and details are TBC.
